She has also been nominated for a Primetime Emmy, two Tony Awards, and two British Academy Film Awards.<\/p>\n<p>But her path to this spotlight was anything but easy.<\/p>\n<p>This actress was born on March 24, 1977, in\u00a0Sacramento, California.<\/p>\n<p>She came into the world as Jessica Howard, the child of a vegan chef named Jerri Hastey and a firefighter named Michael Hastey. Her parents were both teenagers when she was born and by all accounts, the young girl wasn\u2019t born into a privileged family.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-181227 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/11\/27113004\/jed-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"578\" height=\"598\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/11\/27113004\/jed-1.png\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Instagram<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She had previously shared with the\u00a0<em>Irish Times<\/em>\u00a0in 2017 about her \u201cvery difficult upbringing,\u201d saying, \u201cI did grow up with a single mother who worked very hard to put food on our table. We did not have money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were many nights when we had to go to sleep without eating,\u201d she recalled. \u201cIt was a very difficult upbringing. Things weren\u2019t easy for me growing up \u2026 Because of my mother, I do always try to think about how something must be for someone else. I\u2019m not so interested in myself. I\u2019m interested in other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-bullied-and-told-she-was-ugly\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bullied and told she was \u201dugly\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Also, just so you know, her firefighter dad was actually her stepdad \u2014 her real father was Michael Monasterio, a rock musician who wasn\u2019t around when she was a kid.<\/p>\n<p>She also had a younger sister, and as children, the two \u201cplayed outside until it was dark,\u201d she recalled in an interview with\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>. They would wish \u201cthe light would stay longer, so you didn\u2019t have to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For years, she remained private about her childhood \u2014 and understandably so.<\/p>\n<p>Later in life, she remembered being bullied as early as age 8 because of her red hair and freckles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI was told every day at school that I was ugly,\u201d she told Glamour. \u201dAnd that no one wanted to be my friend. The most cruel things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tragically, in 2003, her sister died by suicide at their biological father\u2019s home, and Michael Monasterio later passed away in 2013 from bronchitis.<\/p>\n<p>When her father passed away, the award-winning actress didn\u2019t attend the funeral and didn\u2019t speak publicly about his death. She later described the attention around it as \u201cvery difficult.\u201d She also revealed that no father was listed on her birth certificate and there\u2019s \u201cno proof of anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-financial-hurdles\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Financial hurdles<\/h2>\n<p>While most lot of the women around her had kids as teenagers, our star knew that wasn\u2019t the path for her. She found her true passion at just 7 years old when she saw a production of\u00a0<em>Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dAs soon as I saw that I was like, \u2018Oh my god, this is my job, this is what I am,\u2019\u201d she told\u00a0<em>The Telegraph<\/em>. \u201dI\u2019ve always had an active imagination, and I didn\u2019t do very well in the public-school system, but that was a complete aha moment for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And just like that, her dream of becoming an actress was born.<\/p>\n<p>She pursued her dream of acting despite financial hurdles, working at a performing arts school just to take classes there, because, as she explained, \u201cthere was no way my family could afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were people that saw I was struggling as a kid, and they helped me,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd that\u2019s why I ended up where I am now.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-181219 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/11\/27112158\/GettyImages-123273077-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"681\" height=\"681\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/11\/27112158\/GettyImages-123273077-edited.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Trago\/FilmMagic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A huge inspiration was her grandmother, who took her to her first play and always encouraged her to pursue what she loved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI think she saw that I needed an outlet or something to find my people, in a way, and be creative,\u201d the actress shared with The Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n<p>The star also credits Planned Parenthood and access to birth control for giving her options. \u201cIt had a great impact on my life because it gave me choice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>After high school, she landed a spot at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York\u2014 but the dream came with crushing pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI am the first one in my family to go to college and I felt a great responsibility\u2026 It was very expensive. The first two years it was really tough on us,\u201d she told The Hollywood Reporter.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-robin-williams-saved-her\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Robin Williams saved her<\/h2>\n<p>Her path changed thanks to Robin Williams. The legendary actor, a Juilliard alum, awarded her a scholarship that covered tuition, books, her apartment, and even flights home for Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt was after my second year I found I got that scholarship\u2026 It paid for not only all my schoolwork, but it paid for my apartment, and my books, and my flight home to see my family for Christmas,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Though she never met him before his passing in 2014, she sent him countless letters of thanks.<\/p>\n<p>After honing her craft at Juilliard, she began her career on stage and television. Her film debut came at age 31 with the drama\u00a0<em>Jolene<\/em>, but it was 2011 that marked her breakout year, with six films released, including\u00a0<em>Take Shelter<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Tree of Life<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Her performances that year earned critical acclaim, leading to Academy Award nominations for portraying an ambitious socialite in\u00a0<em>The Help<\/em>\u00a0and a determined CIA analyst in\u00a0<em>Zero Dark Thirty<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1733166591\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-14faafc360f499d55b4931feb59208b9\" class=\"newsner-14faafc360f499d55b4931feb59208b9 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-her-most-famous-role\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her most famous role<\/h2>\n<p>Suddenly, the relatively unknown actress found herself right in the heart of Hollywood\u2019s hustle and bustle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWalking down that red carpet with Sean Penn holding one hand and Brad Pitt holding the other, and everyone\u2019s like, \u2018Who is this girl in the yellow dress? Who is this person?\u2019 I knew that that red carpet, after having that premiere, it would just be a turning point in my life,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Help<\/em>\u00a0was a huge success, grossing $216 million at the box office and becoming her most widely seen film to that point.<\/p>\n<p>But most people probably remember her for her role in\u00a0<em>Interstellar<\/em>\u00a0(2014), which brought her recognition with audiences around the world. With a budget of $165 million, the high-profile film, co-starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, was shot primarily using IMAX cameras.<\/p>\n<p>She played the adult daughter of McConaughey\u2019s character and was drawn to the project by the emotional depth of the father-daughter relationship.\u00a0<em>Interstellar<\/em>\u00a0went on to gross over $701 million worldwide, making it her highest-grossing live-action film to date.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-strong-feminist-themes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strong feminist themes<\/h2>\n<p>And now you might be starting to guess who our star is\u2026 yes, it\u2019s Jessica Chastain!<\/p>\n<p>The American actress and producer has gained a reputation for choosing roles and projects with strong feminist themes. Speaking about her off-screen persona, Roy Porter of\u00a0<em>InStyle<\/em>\u00a0magazine wrote in 2015 that \u201dshe\u2019s an adult, which isn\u2019t always a given in Hollywood. More recently, in 2021, she portrayed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/celebrity\/tammy-faye-bakkers-last-photo-is-truly-a-tragic-one\/\">Tammy Faye Bakker<\/a>\u00a0in the biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a role that earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress.<\/p>\n<p>As per 2025, Chastain is a mother of two with husband Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo, a\u00a0fashion executive. The two tied the knot in June 2017, according to Vogue. In terms of a voice, being seen, being acknowledged and valued.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>And honestly\u2026 when you look at where Jessica started, it\u2019s impossible not to be impressed by where she stands today. Coming from hardship, heartbreak, and almost no opportunities, she climbed her way into an industry that isn\u2019t exactly known for being kind, especially to women who don\u2019t fit the \u201ctypical\u201d Hollywood mold.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yet she did it. With talent, grit, and a kind of grounded humility that makes her feel so real.
