Growing up, he found himself spiraling deeper and deeper into\u00a0addiction, using\u00a0drugs\u00a0and\u00a0alcohol\u00a0to numb the pain of his past.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

But today, this American actor, comedian, and filmmaker is living a completely different life alongside his world-famous wife.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On January 2, 1975, a boy was born who would go on to become one of the most recognizable faces in the world. He was born at Beyer Hospital in Ypsilanti, Michigan \u2014 his mother worked at General Motors, and his father was a car salesman. The actor says his mother named him after the wealthy playboy Diogenes Alejandro Xenos from Harold Robbins\u2019 novel\u00a0The Adventurers<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the early years of his life were very turbulent. His parents divorced when he was just three years old. A few years later, something truly devastating happened to him when he was sexually abused.<\/p>\n

He carried the secret for more than 12 years before telling anyone \u2014 an unbearable burden to hold inside, especially for a child.<\/p>\n

\u201dAll that time, I was like \u2026 \u2018It\u2019s my fault,\u2019 as generic as that is, I\u2019m like, I\u2019m gay, I must have manifested this because I\u2019m secretly gay.\u2019 I had all these insane thoughts for 11 years or 12 years,\u201d he\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in 2016.<\/p>\n

He also believes it played a role in his struggles with addiction later in life. That connection was echoed by a statistic his mother \u2014 a court-appointed advocate for foster children \u2014 encountered through her work.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve been molested, you only have a 20 percent chance of not being an addict,\u201d the actor said.\u00a0\u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Hm, interesting,\u2019 because in my mind I just like to have a f\u2014\u2013g great time. But when you hear a statistic like that, I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh no, I was going to be an addict, period.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Amid all the darkness that seemed to shadow his career, the actor still had role models in his life\u2014people who worked hard and tried to stay on the right path. One of the most important? His own mother. She had started at GM as a night-shift janitor, but through sheer determination and grit, she worked her way up to become the owner of four shops, overseeing publicity events for magazine journalists.<\/p>\n

Working with Ashton Kutcher<\/h2>\n

Between the ages of 14 and 18, the actor hit the road with his mother, working alongside her as they traveled from racetrack to racetrack.<\/p>\n

He later attended Santa Monica College but eventually moved to Los Angeles. A friend from Santa Barbara, Kareem Elseify, introduced him to The Groundlings improv troupe, where he decided to audition \u2014 marking his first time acting.<\/p>\n

Improvisation and sketch comedy classes followed, and after about five years, he joined The Groundlings\u2019 Sunday Company, alongside talents like Melissa McCarthy, Octavia Spencer, Fortune Feimster, Tate Taylor, and Nat Faxon.<\/p>\n

From 2003 onward, he appeared on the improv-style, Candid Camera-inspired show\u00a0Punk\u2019d<\/em>\u00a0with Ashton Kutcher, continuing with the series when it was revived in 2012.<\/p>\n

A small breakthrough on the big screen came with the comedy\u00a0Without a Paddle<\/em>. Despite negative reviews, the film was a commercial success, raking in over $65 million worldwide by 2009.<\/p>\n

The movie that changed his life<\/h2>\n

A few years later, he continued appearing in films, landing his first leading role in\u00a0Let\u2019s Go to Prison<\/em>\u00a0(2006) alongside Will Arnett and Chi McBride. He then had a main role in the 2008 comedy\u00a0Baby Mama<\/em>, starring opposite Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.<\/p>\n

Everything changed when he landed a supporting role in the romantic comedy\u00a0When in Rome<\/em>, playing one of the female lead\u2019s would-be suitors. Though small, the part had a huge impact. The woman he acted opposite would become his future wife \u2014 none other than Kristen Bell.<\/p>\n

The couple announced their engagement in January 2010 but chose to delay their wedding until California legalized same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n

In the early part of his career, the actor said that, aside from a single year in high school when he experimented with drugs, he didn\u2019t have a substance abuse problem until he turned 18. After that, he struggled for years with alcohol, cocaine, and prescription pills.<\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0Playboy<\/em>, the star reflected on his turbulent past and how his early relationship with Bell faced its challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cKristen\u2019s a good girl. She grew up very Christian, went straight to college, did great in school and started work immediately. She\u2019s charitable and philanthropic and rescues dogs,\u201d\u00a0he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the things I\u2019d done were terrifying to her, and she had a hard time believing I would ever be able to stay married and monogamous and a father and all those things. For the first year and a half we were together that was what we battled over almost weekly.\u201d<\/p>\n

So who is this actor, filmmaker, and now podcast host? None other than Dax Shepard.<\/p>\n

His life hasn\u2019t been without its struggles \u2014 he revealed that he suffered a relapse after 16 years of sobriety, later sharing on Chelsea Clinton\u2019s\u00a0In Fact<\/em>\u00a0podcast how he talks about it with his daughters.<\/p>\n

Shepard explained that he is upfront with Lincoln and Delta, telling them he attends AA meetings twice a week because, as he puts it, \u201cI\u2019m an alcoholic, and if I don\u2019t go there, then I\u2019ll drink and then I\u2019ll be a terrible dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The day after his relapse, Bell \u2014 then pregnant with their daughter Lincoln \u2014 surprised him by traveling to be with him. Shepard admitted he had taken pills, and Bell reassured him:<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s like, \u2018You clearly need to call someone in AA, but I would say you\u2019re f\u2014 up from this accident, you got high with your dad, keep it moving. You don\u2019t need to redefine it. You didn\u2019t lose eight years,\u2019 which was so comforting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that was eight years ago,\u201d he said in 2020. \u201cAnd now I have this experience where I did that, I felt bad, but there wasn\u2019t really any fallout from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Besides hosting\u00a0Armchair Expert<\/em>, a podcast where he chats with celebrities, journalists, and academics about their lives, he\u2019s also a passionate car enthusiast. Shepard owns the 1967 Lincoln Continental featured in\u00a0Hit and Run<\/em>\u00a0and even competes in off-road racing.<\/p>\n

Shepard and his wife have also been active in protecting their children\u2019s privacy, advocating for California Senate Bill 606, known as the \u201cno-kids paparazzi\u201d law.<\/p>\n

Bell explained,\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re not saying that we can\u2019t be newsworthy. We\u2019re saying that our child is not newsworthy.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The bill, which passed in 2013, included testimony from actresses Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner.<\/p>\n
