Two cowboys came upon an Indian lying on his stomach with his ear to the ground.
\nOne of the cowboys stops and says to the other, \u201cYou see that Indian?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d says the other cowboy.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook,\u201d says the first one, \u201cHe\u2019s listening to the ground. He can hear things for miles in any direction.\u201d<\/p>\n
Just then the Indian looks up. \u201cCovered wagon,\u201d he says, \u201cAbout two miles away. Have two horses, one brown, one white. Man, woman, child, furniture in wagon \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIncredible!\u201d says the cowboy to his friend. \u201cThis Indian knows how far away they are, how many horses, what color, what\u2019s in the wagon \u2014 just amazing!\u201d<\/p>\n
The Indian looks up and says, \u201cUgh \u2026 not amazing \u2026 wagon ran \u2026 over me \u2026 30 minutes ago!\u201d<\/p>\n
It was autumn, and the Indians on the remote reservation asked their new Chief if the winter was going to be cold or mild.
\nSince he was an Indian Chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets, and when he looked at the sky, he couldn\u2019t tell what the weather was going to be.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he replied to his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect wood to be prepared.<\/p>\n
But also being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, \u201cIs the coming winter going to be cold?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt looks like this winter is going to be quite cold, indeed!\u201d the Meteorologist at the weather service responded.<\/p>\n
So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared.<\/p>\n
One week later, he called the National Weather Service again.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs it going to be a very cold winter?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d the man at National Weather Service again replied, \u201cit\u2019s going to be a very cold winter.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of wood they could find.<\/p>\n
Two weeks later, he called the National Weather Service again.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d the man replied. \u201cIt looks like it\u2019s going to be one of the coldest winters ever.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow can you be so sure?\u201d the Chief asked.<\/p>\n
